I was nervous to read this book! I liked Everything I Never Told You, but I didn’t love it as much as other people did. Unfortunately, I think it was miscategorized as a mystery when it really wasn’t, and I think that confused the novel for me. When I saw how much hype Little Fires Everywhere was getting, I was worried that I would feel the same “meh” that I did with Ng’s first novel.

That did not happen! There is a big inciting event that the book opens with, but there was no doubt about the cause of that event – no big mystery. That opening is really the beginning, and what follows was an absolutely masterful novel about family, motherhood, community, and womanhood. I don’t want to say too much about it, only that I absolutely adored it and am amazed at how many plotlines Ng was able to weave together to create this powerful novel. It’s worth the hype.
