This book has gotten so much buzz on bookstagram and on Goodreads – I read the summary and picked it up to see what all the fuss was about. I really didn’t love it as much as lots of people did! I do think that the setup was interesting, and I found the events deeply disturbing (obviously), but there was something about it that just didn’t land for me. I think I wanted more specific description and world-building, and I was often frustrated by the shifting perspectives – I didn’t feel like I got enough from each person. And maybe that was the point – the girls in the book were assembling a narrative from very little information and they aren’t able to talk to each other, and they didn’t feel the need to describe their community in great detail because that’s all they knew.

Although this novel was not my favorite, the premise is one that I’ll not soon forget.

Here’s what I wish: The last chapter of this book is the beginning, and the story of the island is told through flashbacks as the escaped women arrive in the Wasteland and come to understand how they were raised.
