#1/3 in the His Dark Materials Series
I picked this up in preparation for Pullman’s new “Book of Dust” coming out in October of this year (OMG CANNOT WAIT). I was late to this party – I only read the His Dark Materials trilogy for the first time last year. For some reason, when I was a kid and these were coming out, I heard that there was controversy about the books, and I misunderstood and thought that people didn’t like them because they were too religious (or something). In reality, the opposite is true, and I wish I had known that years ago! I absolutely adore this series, and I’m getting totally new things from the story on a second read.
I’m fully on board for an adventure fantasy story with a badass heroine, and the Golden Compass doesn’t disappoint. It also really doesn’t suffer from the first-book-in-a-series problems that you often see – it finds its groove quickly, and to great results.
I can’t wait to re-read the other two!
